The PVSA and/or PTSA instrument is a specialized computer that is capable of measuring psychophysiological stress. It measures stress when you verbally respond "yes" or "no" to a stimulus (a question or statement). This PVSA computer measures emotional stress in a very precise and accurate manner.
How is this possible? Much in the same way your brain (your body's computer) can tell by the sound of someone's voice, even over the phone, their emotional state of mind happy or sad, angry or depressed, calm or nervous, etc. The PVSA computer is adjusted to your current level of general nervous tension by asking irrelevant questions such as: Are you now in the United States? Is today Sunday?; Is this the month of January?; etc. Abnormal stress reactions patterns are detected when you significantly deviate from these previously established norms or continuing base line (this is referred to as the “Irrelevant/Relevant” exam).
What causes a significant emotional reaction? Without going into a detailed explanation of the neural basis of emotional reactions, when there is conflict between your subconscious memory of facts and conscious answer, a chain reaction of events occur in your brain (beyond your conscious control) that causes an abnormal emotional reaction to occur. The computer detects and records this abnormal pattern change when you respond "yes" or "no".
Example: What does 2 + 2 equal? What do the letters C A T spell? Do you know the square root of 19? You either know the answer or you don't. The answer comes into your conscious mind from your subconscious memory before you can even begin to utter the answer. It is impossible not to know the answer. You can utter that which you know to be true or false. There is no in between answer, you must respond with either a "YES" or "NO". If you decide to utter the truth, this creates one type of stress pattern. If you decide to utter a falsehood, this creates another type of stress pattern.
The issues are first explained to you in a specially designed pre-interview questionnaire on which you will write your answers. After you have completed this questionnaire the interviewer will discuss with you the issues and your answers.
The test and questions are formulated by the examiner to verify the information you have provided during this pre examination interview. Example: "Did you intentionally lie when you said 2 + 2 equals _____?"; "Did you truthfully answer the questions concerning what C A T spells?"; "Do know the square root of 19?" When you consciously decide how you will answer, there is either agreement or disagreement between your conscious mind and your subconscious memory. If there is disagreement between your conscious mind and subconscious memory then you will have an emotional reaction beyond your control which produces psychophysiological stress and the computer will detect your abnormal reaction patterns.
The PVSA computer measures stress from the vocal cord vibrations. All of these functions are controlled by the autonomic nervous system and are important indicators or transmitters of psychological stress. The PVSA computer then weights and averages these variations and then registers the result numerically ("no" = 050). The following referred to as the “Control/Relevant Tri Zone of Comparison” exam.

CONCLUSION:
Abnormal reaction patterns detected in Q9 and confirmed by Q11.
Reaction patterns to the Relevant Issue is also greater than the Control Issue.
Therefore, it should be concluded that the subject did not make full disclosure regarding the Relevant Issue.
